The Bush administration thrust headlong into Iraq. Secret information to
justify our preemptive strike was gathered: seized government documents,
intercepted phone calls and media reports. There was only one problem, not
enough translators.
U.S. agencies did not translate information that hinted at imminent terrorist
attacks until Sept. 12, 2001. Also two military linguists were recently
arrested at Guatanamo Bay on suspicion of terrorism. Shock and awe suddenly
has become "Aw Shucks" as intelligence agencies scramble and flounder to
enlist linguists.
So the next time you see an "English Only" initiative be careful, it could
very well be al-Qaida sponsoring it.
