Sen. Linda Aguirre, a Phoenix Democrat barred by term limits from running for re-election to the Senate this year, said Thursday that she has changed her mind and will run for a Maricopa County justice of the peace position rather try to return to the state House.

On Thursday, she said acknowledged that the justice of the peace post pays more than serving in the Legislature but said she also had long wanted to be a justice of the peace.

Aguirre, the Senate Democratic minority's leader, previously had filed to run for a House seat. She previously served in the House from 1993 to 1998 before being elected to the Senate in 1998.

While in the Legislature, Aguirre sponsored legislation to implement statewide funding of all-day kindergarten and increased spending on English-learning programs.
