A federal judge has set a March 4 deadline for the Legislature
to increase funding for programs for students who are learning
the English language.
U.S. District Judge Raner C. Collins of Tucson has also said he
will impose sanctions if the state fails to comply with his
order.
But he didn't specify what those sanctions might be.
The contempt order stems from the Legislature's failure to meet
a previous deadline set by the judge.
The case centers on several rulings by Collins and another judge
that the state has failed to provide adequate funding for
programs for students who are learning English.
