Phoenix is boasting more sofa-surfers this year compared with last, jumping
ahead in the Nielsen Co. rankings for the number of both Hispanic and overall
television households.
Phoenix passed the San Francisco Bay Area to move from No. 9 to No. 8 with
358,440 Hispanic television homes.
That growth helped Phoenix climb in the overall rankings for the third year in a
row, coming in at No. 12 nationwide, edging past the Tampa-St.
Petersburg, Fla., market.
Television stations use the ratings to set advertising prices, but the growth
doesn't necessarily mean all Phoenix ad rates will rise.
"The stations that command the revenue are the stations that actually attract
viewers," Nielsen spokesman Gary Holmes said. "But more than likely, the
Spanish-language stations will benefit the most."
