State to appeal ruling in English-learner case

It's back to court in the legal battle over what the state needs to do to properly educate students who are lacking in English-language skills.

Republican legislative leaders on Wednesday decided to appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in the Flores vs. Arizona lawsuit. The decision mirrors the reaction lawmakers had last week after learning that U.S. District Court Judge Raner Collins had rejected their plan for educating English-language learners.

The appeal likely will extend the case into next year. The lawsuit was filed in 1992.
