The 22nd annual Torneo de Ortografía Conrado Gómez, southern
Arizona's Spanish Spelling Tournament, will take place this
Saturday, March 13, from 9:00 AM to noon at Pueblo High School,
3500 S. 12th Ave., Tucson, AZ.
Students from as far away as Yuma and Phoenix will be competing
for cash prizes. The public is welcomed.

The
University of Arizona, Department of Language, Reading and Culture,
and the American Indian Studies Program will host the 25th
Annual American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI).
Celebrating 25 years as a unique Institute for Native language
education and a champion of Indigenous language rights is central to
this year’s theme: Indigenous Language and Education Rights.
A mini-conference and 4-week courses will focus on the
accomplishments of AILDI and its participants, current issues in
Native American education and language rights, and action plans.

Education Hosts American
Indian Education Panel
A panel of American Indian
educators will discuss current issues and challenges in American
Indian education on Thursday, April 1, at 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in the
University of Arizona College of Education, Kiva Auditorium.
The college’s department of
language, reading and culture and graduate-level class on American
Indian Languages, Cultures & Schooling is sponsoring the event.
Panelists will include American Indian community-based educators
from Gila River Indian Community, Ha:sañ Preparatory & Leadership
School, Blackwater Community School, Pascua Yaqui Indian Community.
The

Hispanic Institute of Social Issues wants to thank the many of you

This endeavor could not be possible without you. We only have four
more days left to complete this wonderful project,
and
we are ready
now to begin organizing the pick up of the books. In the next three
days we will be in the following areas available to pick up the
books at your location. Please email or call us to let us know your
address and best time to stop by.
Books will be inventoried this weekend and delivered early next
week, as we have completed all paperwork required and the Florence
Prison is waiting for them.

Central
and
West
valley area. And,
Saturday
we will be in the
Mesa,
Scottsdale,

4/26/03 Saturday - Sino-American Bilingual Discussion Group.
2:00 PM. at Glendale Main Library. Large Meeting Room. This NEW book
grooup will explore the Chinese American experience and heritage in
North America. This month: The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan.
IMPORTANT: Your children may not be allowed
to attend Dual Language Classes. Arizona's superintendent
of public education, Tom Horne has created new guidelines that will
prevent most children from entering Dual Language Programs.
Coalition for Education is a group of dual language
parents that is committed to providing information and preparing
dual language supporters to take action against these guidelines.
There is much that we can do to fight these guidelines and everyone
has to become involved,
Otherwise your children will be denied a Dual Language
Education.

nuevos lineamientos para evitar que la mayoria de los ninos ingresen
a Programas de Dos Idiomas.
COALICION POR LA EDUCACION
Es un grupo de Padres de Familia comprometidos en
informar y preparar a las personas que apoyan Dos Idiomas a tomar
accion en contra de estos lineamientos. Existen muchas maneras para
luchar en contra de esta injusticia y cada uno nos tenemos que
comprometer e involucrar en esta lucha. De otro modo a sus ninos se
les negara la Educacion en Dos Idiomas.

residents of the United States are not eligible for State or federal
financial assistance because of their immigration status. In
addition, they are generally classified as international
students and therefore are required to pay higher tuition and fees.
However, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF),
has compiled a list of
