POR QUE DESEO SER BILINGÜE
Ser bilingüe es bueno porque mi vida se hace mejor y más fuerte. Me siento más inteligente porque antes nomás sabía hablar en español. Ahora puedo hacer mi trabajo en dos idiomas. Yo puedo leer y escribir en español y en inglés y también puedo traducir en los dos idiomas.
Gracias a mi familia que me enseñó a escribir y a leer en español desde muy pequeña. Mis padres me compraban libros para practicar palabras.
A mí me gusta mucho aprender bien el español y también el inglés. Yo le enseño a mi hermanito matemáticas y le estoy enseñando hablar en ingles.
Mi familia dice que ser bilingüe es importante porque ellos no quieren que yo olvide el español. Nosotros tenemos familia en Sinaloa, México, la cual visitamos seguido. A mi también me gustan las canciones de Pedro Infante y las sé de memoria.
Vivimos en los Estados Unidos y mis padres me dicen que yo debo aprender bien el inglés para ir al colegio para ser doctora. Por eso creo que ser bilingüe es muy importante.
WHY I WANT TO BE BILINGUAL
Being bilingual is good because my life becomes better and stronger. I feel more intelligent because before I only knew how to speak Spanish. Now I can do my work in two languages. I can read and write in Spanish and English and I can translate in both languages.
Thanks to my family that showed me how to write and read in Spanish since I was very small. My parents bought me books to practice words.
I like to learn good Spanish and English. I teach my little brother math and I am teaching him how to speak in English.
My family says that being bilingual is important because they don’t want me to forget how to speak in Spanish. We have family in Sinaloa, Mexico, and we visit them often. I also like the songs Pedro Infante sings and I know them by heart.
We live in the United States and my parents tell me that I should learn English well so I can go to college to become a doctor. That is why I believe that being bilingual is very important.

Por que deseo ser bilingüe
Ser bilingüe es una gran ventaja. Estoy recibiendo una educación magnífica en una clase bilingüe, y también he aprendido a apreciar mi cultura.
Cuando empecé la escuela yo nomás hablaba inglés. Ahora me estoy convirtiendo en una persona bilingüe para poder hablar con mi familia y con otras personas. Cuando alguien necesite un intérprete, yo podré traducirle. ¡Estoy aprendiendo español y mi familia se siente muy orgullosa de mí!
El español me ha ayudado mucho con mi educación. Sabiendo dos idiomas me permite concentrar más en mis estudios y me ayudará en prepararme para las clases que quiero. Mis clases de idiomas foráneos serán más fáciles. Podré hacer más trabajo y seré más inteligente.
Ahora aprecio más a mi cultura. Por ejemplo, soy miembro del mariachi “Los Changuitos Feos” y cuando tocamos canciones en español puedo entender lo que cantamos. ¡Es un privilegio muy especial para mí!
El ser bilingüe también me ayudará en mi vida y en mi carrera como veterinaria. Podré hablar con más personas y seguiré aprendiendo de mi cultura para pasársela a mi familia.
Por eso quiero ser bilingüe.
Why I Want to Be Bilingual
To be bilingual is an enormous advantage. I am not only getting a superb education in a bilingual classroom, but I am also learning to appreciate my culture.
When I started school, I only spoke English. Now I am becoming bilingual so I can talk with my family and other people. If a person needs someone to translate for them, I can translate for that person. I am learning Spanish and my family is proud of me!
Learning Spanish has helped me in my education. Knowing two languages helps me to concentrate better in my studies and can help me with the classes that I want. My foreign language classes will be so much easier for me. I will be able to do more work and be more intelligent.
I now appreciate my culture more. For example, as a member of the mariachi group “Los Changuitos Feos,” when I play songs in Spanish, I am able to understand the songs. It is a very special privilege for me!
Being bilingual will also help me in my life and my future career as a veterinarian. I can talk to more people, I can stay close to my culture, and I can pass it on forever.
That is why I want to be bilingual.

Como me ha ayudado ser bilingüe
Personalmente digo que tengo el beneficio de ser tocada por la bendición de ser bilingüe. Siendo parte de la inmensa e increible cultura bilingüe tiene sus ventajas.
Frequentemente algunas personas podrían considerar esto obsurdo, pero soy un ejemplo para establecer que están en lo incorrecto. Los ojos de Dios nos ha seleccionado con el beneficio de ser bilingüe, y les explico el significado.
Como les sucede a varias personas, en ciertas ocasiones requiero viajar a lugares inusuales donde mi lengua natal no es hablada. Para ciudadanos con la falta de no ser bilingües, la comunicación puede ser una severa dificultad. Sin embargo, los bilingües no sufrirían esta trágica crisis.
El bilingüismo no es solo para discutir, pero para ser capaz de oir y escuchar. Nunca sabrás cuando escucharás noticias impresionantes. Por ejemplo, como soy una poliglota, los extranjeros podrían arrastrarme a información de importancia de la cual no he sido informada. Apuesto a que es mejor que pedir el uso de un diccionario, buscando una palabra a la vez.
Me visualizo en el futuro contemplando nuestros mundos tan similares y tan diferentes junto a los bilingües que derriben la barrera del idioma, los obstáculos que nos han dividido por tanto tiempo, separándonos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, barreras que deberían ser destruidas.
How Being Bilingual Has Helped Me
I personally am glad to say that I enjoy the benefits and blessings of bilingualism. Being part of a vast and incredible bilingual culture has many advantages.
Although some people may consider that statement absurd, I serve as an example that proves them wrong. God’s eyes have selected some people to enjoy the benefits of being bilingual, and I shall explain what I mean by this.
Like many others, at times I am required to travel to different places where my native tongue is not spoken. For citizens that suffer from a lack of bilingual ability, communication can be quite difficult. Fortunately, bilinguals are able to avoid that tragic crisis.
Bilingualism isn’t just about speaking. It is also about listening and understanding. You never know when you might hear important information. For instance, since I am multilingual, foreigners can introduce me to important facts that I had never known. I bet that’s better than asking for a dictionary to search for one word at a time.
I visualize my future and see a time when our worlds, so different yet alike, will come together as we overcome the language barriers and obstacles that have divided us from each other for such a long time, when the barriers that separate us from our brothers and sisters finally will be destroyed.

¡Me encanta ser bilingüe!
Cada día voy a mi clase y aprendo sin tener que pensar en que idioma estoy hablando. Mi mente automáticamente trabaja en dos idiomas. A veces estoy hablando en español y en un instante cambio a inglés porque alguien me ha empezado a hablar en el otro idioma.
Me encanta poder hablar en dos idiomas porque me permite hablar con más personas. Personalmente, soy una persona muy social y poder hablar con muchas personas es fenomenal.
Cuando encuentro un problema difícil en un examen, ser bilingüe me ayudo mucho. Pienso en dos modos! Mi cerebro descubre una resolución más rápido. Se ha comprobado que personas que hablan más de un idioma son más inteligentes que las personas que sola hablan un idioma. ¡Si todos pudiéramos hablar en cinco idiomas, seríamos tan inteligentes!
Además me encanta ser bilingüe porque cuando crezca quiero tener un trabajo en que pudiera mejorar nuestras relaciones con otros países. Recientemente mi mamá fue a Honduras con la organización Engineers Without Borders para ayudarles con los drenajes. Estuvo ahí una semana, traduciendo entre los clientes y los ingenieros.
Cuando yo traduzco, siento un gran orgullo porque sé que he hecho algo que ha mejorado nuestro mundo, aunque sea un poquito. Por eso me gusta ser bilingüe.
I Love Being Bilingual!
Every day I go to class and learn without having to think about what language I’m using. My mind automatically works in either language. At times I’ll be speaking Spanish and then instantly switch to English because someone began to talk to me in the other language.
I love being able to speak in two languages because it allows me to speak to more people. Personally, I am a very social person and being able to speak to many people is phenomenal.
When I come across a very challenging test problem, being bilingual helps me. I can think in two ways! My brain will think of a resolution much faster because it’s working in two languages. It has been proven that people who speak more than one language are smarter than people who just speak one language. If we all could speak in five languages, we’d be really smart!
I also love being bilingual because when I’m older I can get a job to improve relations with other countries. Just recently my mom went to Honduras with the organization Engineers Without Borders to help with their waste water. They were there for a week and she translated between the clients and the engineers traveling with her.
When I translate, I feel a great sense of pride because inside I know I did something that improved the world at least a little bit. That’s why I like being bilingual.

El camino
Ser una mujer joven y bilingüe en este maravilloso país abre muchas puertas de oportunidad. A lo que mi memoria puede alcanzar a recordar, yo recuerdo ver usado mi lengua nativa, el español. También recuerdo mi dificultad al comunicarme con otros.
Ahora realizo el valor que tiene el ser bilingüe y tener la facilidad de comunicarme en dos idiomas con muchas personas que podrán entrar a mi vida aunque solo hablen una u otra de las dos lenguas. Considerando que anticipo un futuro comprometedor, mi vocabulario progresa en las dos lenguas.
Acostumbrándome a una lengua nueva fue una prueba. Después de pocos años de ver utilizado y practicado las dos lenguas, he sobresalido los obstáculos y ahora puedo escribir en español e inglés, y tengo la capacidad de traducir para la gente que entra a Estados Unidos o a México.
Ahora soy un instrumento para mi familia y para otros. Puedo ser la voz para otras personas que no tienen la ventaja que yo tengo. Yo sé lo que se siente de que aprovechen de uno como lo hicieron de mí.
El español es mi lengua de origen. Estoy orgullosa de esa herencia, y camino con la frente en alto, llevando mi placer con honestidad. Puedo ver mi reflección y no avergonzarme de mí misma.
En mi futuro el ser bilingüe me aventaja para carreras de estudio. Por el camino voy a absorbar todo lo que pueda. Con educación formal y con las experiencias de la vida, creo que el futuro nos promete unas oportunidades infinitas.
The Path
Being a young bilingual woman in this wonderful country opens many doors of opportunity. As far as my memory reaches, I recall always using my native language, Spanish. I also remember my difficult struggle in trying to communicate with others.
Now I realize the value of being bilingual and having the ability to communicate in two languages with the many people who may enter my life even though they may only speak one of the two languages. In anticipation of a promising future, I have continued to expand my vocabulary in both languages.
Adjusting to a new language was a challenge. After a few years of using and practicing both languages, I have overcome many language barriers and can write in English and Spanish, as well as translate for many people who enter as visitors to the United States or Mexico.
Now I am an instrument for my family and others to use. I can be the voice for others who don’t have the advantage that I have. I know what it feels like to be taken advantage of by others.
Spanish is my native language. I am proud of my heritage and I walk with my head held high and confident that I live my life with integrity. I can look at my reflection and not be ashamed of my background.
Being bilingual gives me an advantage in choosing a future career. Throughout my life’s journey I want to absorb all the learning that I can. With a formal education and life’s experiences, I believe the future offers us infinite possibilities.
